In late Latin Laureana means “land rich in laurel trees”. First mention of the village is in a document dating 1058.
For five centuries, its position dominating the Golfo di Salerno and the castles of Agropoli and Capaccio, and its being at the crossroads of
communication routes linking the settlements in the Alento Valley to ports along the coast gave Laureana a prominent role in the history of feudal Cilento.
Eminent among the historical figures from Laureana are Ludovico Del Mercato, who was Frederic the Second’s physician, A.S. Del Sergio, jurist and man of letters, and the noted jurist Ottavio Bambacaro. Other distinguished citizens were: the physician Orazio Sanseverino, Gian Cola del Mercato and Luigi Limoni, jurist and member of Parliament.
